A. Judy Street - What
B. Tina Mason - What
Courtesy of legendary writer/producer/singer H B Barnum comes one of Northern Soul's all-time classics - "What" by Indiana blue-eyed soul girl Judy Street. First played in the UK at the Leeds All-Dayers in 1973 before taking Wigan Casino by storm. The B side features Tina Mason's 1967 - LP only - rendition of the song. In 1982 Soft Cell took the song into the UK top ten but in a recent interview with Marc Almond he recalled that they had actually recorded a cover of Franki Valli’s “The Night” but the record company preferred “What”.
