A. Tommy Hunt - The Work Song
B. Oscar Brown Jr - Work Song
TOMMY HUNT needs no introduction to Northern Soul and R&B collectors and has long been regarded as one of the true stalwarts of the scene. His now legendary performance at the Wigan Casino 2nd Anniversary has kept him busy over the past 40+ years both in the charts and the clubs. Here we present his dancefloor version of “The Work Song” recorded for Scepter records in 1962. Hunt’s stand out recording joins a long line of covers played on the scene over the years including Cleveland Robinson, Trade Martin, Nina Simone, Pat Lundy, James Royal et al.
OSCAR BROWN JR was a multi-talented singer/songwriter and civil rights activist who burst onto the R&B scene in 1960 with his classic, jazz-infused, breakthrough album ‘Sin & Soul’. Not only did the album provide us with the original vocal version of “Work Song” but it also spawned Mod anthems “Humdrum Blues” and “Watermelon Man”.
